About | Mnemokino

The movie theater is a necessity. Nothing beats this incredible experience of watching a movie projected on a big screen. However, our behaviors are changing. A giant catalog is available on our TVs and smartphones provided by streaming services. Suddenly, a movie from decades ago is as fresh as this week's premiere. So what to watch? The blog Mnemokino selects, among the streamings and the premieres, some jewels that deserve attention for the way they approach social and political themes, highlighted in each review. Each film is a window that helps us understand our History. Welcome! Subscribe to our newsletter and receive our content in your email (the form is below).

My name is Carla Dórea Bartz, and I am a journalist.

In 2003, I got a master's degree in film studies. I wrote a dissertation about Brazilian filmmaker Alberto Cavalcanti entitled Coal Face: a film by Alberto Cavalcanti (read here). These days, I rate it as an introduction to this director's work.

In October 2021, I defended my doctoral thesis entitled Nymphomaniac, by Lars von Trier: narrating in perverse times. The theoretical line is materialist criticism.

I wrote the thesis during the Covid-19 pandemic between September 2020 and July 2021. It is a much more mature work that expanded my knowledge about point-of-view in cinema and the presence of historical materialism in the work-of-art (read here).

Recently, I decided to write film reviews, putting into practice the years of study.

Both academic works are exercises in film analysis produced at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP).

Welcome to Mnemokino. All texts are my own. If you are going to share, I would appreciate it if you refer to the source.
